Report By Hashir Khursheed
As the Jalandhar constituency gears up for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the youth emerge as a pivotal force, brimming with aspirations and determined to exercise their democratic right for the first time. In the bustling streets of Jalandhar, I encountered individuals like Rohan Dogra, Priyanshu Pandey, and a group of friends – Abhay, Gautam, Ankit, and Sudeep – each sharing their unique expectations and motivations for casting their votes.
Rohan Dogra: Championing Educational Reform
Rohan Dogra, a dedicated student on the cusp of graduation, epitomizes the fervor of the youth seeking transformative changes in the education system. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s belief in the power of education to uplift societies, Rohan advocates for comprehensive reforms to ensure equitable access to quality education for all.
With slogans echoing Gandhi’s timeless wisdom, such as “शिक्षा ही जीवन है” (Education is life), Rohan mobilizes his peers to prioritize educational reform as a cornerstone of societal progress.
Priyanshu Pandey: A Call for Job Opportunities
Priyanshu Pandey, another first-time voter, echoes the sentiments of countless young Indians grappling with the daunting challenge of unemployment. For Priyanshu, securing viable job opportunities is paramount, reflecting Gandhi’s emphasis on economic self-reliance and dignity of labor.
With slogans inspired by Gandhi’s principles, such as “कर्मणयेवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन” (Your duty is to work, but not to expect the fruits thereof), Priyanshu advocates for policies that prioritize job creation and economic empowerment for the youth.
Abhay, Gautam, Ankit, and Sudeep: Voices for Social Reform
The quartet of friends, united in their vision for a better Jalandhar, demand holistic reforms encompassing anti-drug initiatives, cleanliness drives, and eradication of corruption.
Drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s ideals of truth and non-violence, they rally behind slogans such as “स्वच्छता ही सेवा” (Cleanliness is service) and “सत्याग्रह का मार्ग अव्यवसायिकता” (The path of truth is non-violence). Their collective voice resonates with Gandhi’s call to action, urging the youth to be the change they wish to see in society.
Political Leanings and NOTA
While some youth express satisfaction with the Aam Aadmi Party’s initiatives, others are inclined towards giving the Bharatiya Janata Party a chance to lead. However, a significant portion of first-time voters contemplates exercising the power of None of the Above (NOTA), reflecting their disillusionment with traditional political narratives. Their diverse perspectives embody Gandhi’s vision of a vibrant democracy, where every voice is heard and respected.
Conclusion: Empowering Youth for a Brighter Future
In the labyrinthine lanes of Jalandhar, the youth emerge as torchbearers of change, driven by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and a fervent desire for a better tomorrow. As they prepare to cast their votes for the first time, they embody the spirit of hope, resilience, and determination. Let their voices echo across the corridors of power, reminding the leaders of today to heed the aspirations of tomorrow. In their hands lies the power to shape the destiny of Jalandhar and forge a path towards progress, prosperity, and peace.
Let us join hands with them on this transformative journey, inspired by the timeless wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi: “जीवन का अंतिम लक्ष्य न केवल विवेकबद्ध व्यक्ति का निर्माण है, बल्कि समाज का भी” (The ultimate goal of life is not only the development of an individual with conscience but also of society).
