The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to conduct a mandatory COVID-19 test for all people arriving in UP from Delhi as the national capital has witnessed a surge in coronavirus cases for over a month now and failed to contain the spread.
Gautam Budh Nagar district has already been conducting random checks on people coming from Delhi. Following the same measure, adjoining state Haryana has also checking commuters from Delhi in Gurugram and Faridabad.
In a statement, UP Chief Secretary Rajendra Kumar Tiwari said: "We will be testing people coming from Delhi via flight, bus or train, in the wake of a surge in Covid-19 cases in the national capital."
"We are discussing on the number of people allowed to attend weddings or other events," he added.
The rise in Covid cases in Delhi over the last few days has forced the neighbouring states and cities to restrict the movement of people.
Covid cases have also been rising in UP.
