Women protesting against alleged embezzlement in the
Punjab Police constable recruitment exam were beaten up pitilessly by policemen
at PAP in Jalandhar on Saturday afternoon.
It’s been two days today and nearly 40-odd aspirants for
the post of constable from Jalandhar and other cities of Punjab have been
protesting on the GT Road.
The protesters first blocked the BSF Chowk on Thursday
and then shifted to PAP flyover on Friday. Owing to the protest staged by
aspirants, roads to Jalandhar bus stand, PAP and Rama Mandi are still packed
with vehicles. Police have been deployed at the scene of the protest.
On the third day of the protest today, the aspirants
staged ‘dharna’ outside the main PAP gate and there were reports of scuffle
between police and protesters. Also, videos from the scene are going viral
in which policemen could be seen beating up women protesters.

Talking to TrueScoop, the aspirants alleged anomalies in
the recruitment process and raised questions over the shortlisted candidates
for the next stage of the recruitment process.
They said on Friday they met ADGP-cum-Chairman of the
Punjab Police Recruitment Board Gurpreet Deo who tried to pacify them, but they
are not convinced by his assurances and want an inquiry by a three-member
committee of civil services officials to look into their allegations.
The candidates further said if their demands were not
met, they would not call off their protest anytime soon.
