India registers 46,791 new covid-19 cases across the country. The deadly infection has now affected about 7.6 million people in India. 587 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, pushing the toll to 1,15,197. Of the 75,97,063 confirmed cases, 7,48, 538 cases are still active in the country, while recoveries stand at 66,33,328. According to experts, the coronavirus epidemic in India may have already peaked in mid-September. A government-appointed committee of scientists has said that if people continue wearing masks and maintain physical distancing measures at the current level for some more three to four months the disease will likely “run its course” by February next year.
After lockdown measures have been eased, economic activities are picking up pace. But the economic recovery has shown some paradoxes. Participation in the labour force has seen a decline, surging inflation rate despite weak demand in the market and rural India is seeing an increase in jobs while employment in urban India is on a downward slope.
World Health Organization officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to quarantine rules for those who test positive and those who have come in contact with a positive case, as Europe faces a surge in numbers. Globally, the coronavirus infections have passed 40.2 million cases, with taking over 1.1 million lives.
