On Sunday, India crossed the 70-lakh mark with more than 70,000 new cases. As per the Ministry of Health data, the coronavirus cases in India stands at 70,53,807 with 74,383 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. Out of the total cases, 8,67,496 are active cases, 60,77,977 cured/discharged cases with a recovery rate of 86.17 per cent. With 918 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll in India now stands at 1,08,334.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected State in the country with 2,36,947 active cases while as many as 12,29,339 patients have been cured and discharged, claiming 39,732 lives so far in the state. Karnataka with 1,18,870 active cases, 5,61,610 recoveries and 9,789 deaths is also severely affected by the pandemic. Kerala too has 91,841 active cases, while 1,75,304 people have been cured and discharged in the State so far.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that a total of 8,68,77,242 samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far in the country. Out of these, 10,78,544 samples were tested on Saturday alone.

# Maharashtra Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said that schools in the state will not reopen before Diwali as the cases continue to rise.
# Uttar Pradesh Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma, who is also minister of secondary and higher education, announced that schools will reopen from October 19 and in the first phase, schools will reopen for class IX to XII. Students will be called on alternate days in two shifts.
# 13 new COVID cases reported in Mizoram, taking the total tally to 2,175. The number of active cases now stands at 191.
# Karnataka government suspends learning scheme amid fear of COVID spread. On Saturday, primary and secondary education minister S Suresh announced: “I have noticed the opinions expressed in some sections regarding the Vidyagama programme. The principal secretary (education department) has been directed to temporarily stop the Vidyagama programme until the department completes the relevant analysis.”
# On October 10, Andaman and Nicobar reported 16 new Covid-19 cases and 20 recoveries, taking total cases to 3,992 including 193 active cases, 55 deaths and 3,744 recoveries.
# 239 have tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh, pushing the tally to 11,998, a health department official said here on Sunday. The total number of recoveries in the state stands at 9,035.
# Telangana reported 1,717 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state tally to 2,12,063 while five more deaths pushed the toll to 1,222. As many as 46,657 samples were tested on October 10 in the state.
# According to Jharkhand's health official, the state COVID-19 tally rose to 91,951 on Sunday as 697 more people tested positive for the infection. Three more patients died of the infection, taking the state's coronavirus death toll to 784. With 8,362 active COVID cases, 82,805 people have been cured of the disease so far. The state has tested 28,104 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.
# The Governments in Goa and Gujarat are not in favour of reopening of schools anytime soon. Teachers fear that it will not be possible to maintain social distancing in schools. Thus, the decision is ongoing.
