CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury's son, Ashish Yechury, 34, dies due to Covid related complications, leaders express shock & grief

CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury's son died on Thursday due to Covid-19 while he was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Gurugram.

"It is with great sadness that I have to inform that I lost my elder son, Ashish Yechury to Covid-19 this morning. I want to thank all those who gave us hope and who treated him - doctors, nurses, frontline health workers, sanitation workers and innumerable others who stood by us," the senior leader said in a tweet.

Ashish Yechury was working with a newspaper and was admitted to the hospital after Covid complications. He would have turned 35 on June 9, and was recovering well at Gurgaon's Medanta Hospital. After battling the deadly disease for two-week, Ashish died at 5.30 am. 

Condolences started pouring in for the family’s loss from across parties, journalists and Twitter users, expressing their shock and sending messages of solidarity for the family. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Ashish Yechury's death "tragic and untimely".

 

Expressing grief on Asish Yechury’s death, his father’s party colleague and Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, took to Twitter and said, "Dear Com. @SitaramYechury, our deepest condolences on the loss of Ashish. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time."

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O Brien tweeted: "Condolences, Mr Yechury. To you and the family."

"Deeply saddened and pained to hear about the loss of Ashish Yechury. I offer my heartfelt condolences to Comrade @SitaramYechury, his family and friends at this difficult time," tweeted DMK leader MK Stalin.

 

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said he was devastated by the news. He wrote, "There is no greater loss for a parent to endure. May you find the strength to bear the inexpressible grief of your loss. My heart goes out to you at this painful time."

 

"This is a terrible loss, Sita. We live through the darkest time of our lives. May you have the strength to bear this loss. My heartfelt condolences," lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan said.

Ashish was working with Newslaundry as an Assistant Editor since January. Newslaundry in a tweet said, "We remember him as a warm, gentle and talented friend and colleague. Words fail us but we'd like to extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones in this hour of grief.” Earlier, Ashish had worked with several other media organisations.
