Australia on Sunday defeated Team India by 6 wickets and became the World Champions for the sixth time in the ICC's tournament history. Pat Cummins walked the talk and silenced 1 lakh 30 thousand fans sitting inside the world's largest Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium. Many Team India players broke down on the field while many could not hold back their tears when they reached the dressing room. As a result, PM Modi visited Team India's dressing room where players were too emotional especially Mohammed Shami.

Shami wrote, "Unfortunately yesterday was not our day. I would like to thank all Indians for supporting our team and me throughout the tournament. Thankful to PM @narendramodi for specially coming to the dressing room and raising our spirits. We will bounce back!"
Despite missing out first few matches, Mohammed Shami ended the World Cup 2023 campaign as the highest wicket-taker. In seven matches, Shami took 24 wickets at an average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20, with the best figures of 7/57. Shami had three five-wicket hauls and a four-wicket haul in the tournament and also gained the best bowling figures by an Indian in WC history.
