Canada has introduced new immigration rules that give officials the power to cancel visas for people living in the country on temporary permits, including study and work permits. These changes, made by IRCC, officially took effect on January 31, 2025.
What’s in the New Immigration Rules?
Under these new regulations, Canadian authorities now have the power to cancel a temporary residence visa if they suspect that an individual has provided false information or has a criminal record.
These changes have been in effect since January 31. The IRCC has justified these amendments as a necessary step to improve the immigration system.
This new rule affects all foreign nationals who have come to Canada for study, work, or temporary residence. Additionally, the rules state that officials can revoke permits even if a person has obtained permanent residency or has passed away.
A study visa or work permit can also be cancelled if a border officer suspects that the individual may not leave Canada after their authorized stay expires. These stricter regulations will significantly impact Indian students and workers traveling to Canada.
Who Will Be Affected?
Every year, thousands of Indians apply for Canadian visas, and the number of study permit applications has increased in the last few years. The government of Canada aims to ensure strict compliance with the situation of temporary residence visas.
As per Canadian authorities, this move is taken to improve border security and lower the misuse of study permits.
Notably, Canada at present has 427,000 Indian students enrolled in various institutions. Moreover, between January and July last year, 3.5 lakh plus visitor visas were issued to Indian nationals.
These new rules could have a major impact on Indian students and workers planning to move to Canada. If you are considering studying or working there, it's now more important than ever to follow all visa rules carefully to avoid any issues.
