Is Dr. Death 2 a true story?
The answer is yes. Dr. Death Season 2 is a true story based on an Italian thoracic surgeon and former regenerative medicine researcher named Paolo Macchiarini. Paolo Macchiarini is the perfect instance of how a respected & famous Doctor turned into a notorious and infamous one. As shown in the Dr. Death 2 trailer, the series showcases Paolo Macchiarini's relationship with the journalist Benita Alexander. Furthermore, the series showcase how Paolo's methods went wrong and he was arrested on serious charges one day. Notably, the doctors' community once believed that Paolo Macchiarini would bring a noble prize to the country for his outstanding achievements.
In recent days, Paolo Macchiarini has been infamous for research fraud and manipulative behavior. In fact, Paolo has been convicted of research-related crimes in Italy and Sweden. However, things were not the same during Paolo's peak.
For the unversed, Paolo was considered a pioneer for using both biological and synthetic scaffolds seeded with patients' own stem cells as trachea transplants. Macchiarini was also a visiting professor and director on a temporary contract at Sweden's Karolinska Institutet (KI) from 2010.
What are the accusations against Dr. Paolo?
Dr. Paolo Macchiarini has been accused of unethically performing experimental surgeries, even on relatively healthy patients, resulting in fatalities for seven of the eight patients who received one of his synthetic trachea transplants. Sweden's Expert Group on Scientific Misconduct also found evidence of research fraud by Macchiarini and his co-authors in six papers and called for them to be retracted.
In 2012, Paolo Macchiarini was arrested in Italy and charged with asking patients for money to expedite their procedures. However, the charges were dismissed in May 2015 and the prosecutor's appeal was dismissed in September 2015.
Thereafter, in June 2016 Swedish police opened an investigation into whether Macchiarini might have committed involuntary manslaughter or not. In 2019, an Italian court sentenced Dr. Macchiarini to sixteen months in prison for abuse of office and forging documents. Later, the court found that Macchiarini was convicted of causing bodily harm, but not assault. However, on 21 June 2023 however, Paolo's sentence was increased to two years and six months imprisonment after being found guilty of gross assault against three of his patients by an appeals court in Stockholm.
