An intense heatwave prevails in India as several areas of the country are recording record-breaking temperatures. Yesterday, Punjab saw the highest recorded temperature in over 36 years in the state, recording 48 degrees Celsius in Bathinda. However, another worldwide record was broken today as the capital Delhi recorded the highest temperature ever in the country.
Delhi’s Mugeshpur area recorded a scorching 52.3 degrees Celsius. The previous record for the hottest day in the country was held by Rajasthan’s desert region of Phalodi with 51 degrees Celcius in 2016. The record for highest temperature in Delhi was 43.2 degrees in 2002.
Heat also still prevails in rest of the country with temperatures in Rajsthan reaching a 51 degress Celsius in Churu and Haryana coming third with 50.8 degrees Celsius. However, a fall of up to 4 degrees Celsius was recorded over south Rajasthan districts - Barmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Sirohi, and Jalore - due to moist wind incursion from the Arabian Sea, hopefully indicating the beginning of the heatwave reduction over northwest India.
Talking about Punjab, Bathinda recorded the highest temperature in over 36 years. The previous record was held in Amritsar, Punjab, where 47.7 degrees Celsius was recorded on May 21, 1978.
