The ravaging second wave of COVID-19 which has crippled the capital’s health and civic infrastructure has now claimed 94 lives of Delhi’s municipal corporation workers since March.
Out of these 94 workers, 49 were sanitation workers who primarily were sweepers.
The Municipal Corporation Of Delhi (MCD) employs about 50,000 permanent and temporary sanitation workers, who collected garbage, sweep the streets and perform other sanitation work. They worked even during the peak of the pandemic.
As per MCD’s data, the maximum number of casualties has been suffered by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) where 49 NDMC workers have died in various departments of which 25 were sanitation workers.

29 workers of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Ava lost their lives to COVID out of which 16 were sanitation workers. East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) ranked third with deaths of 16 workers of which 8 were sanitisation workers.
There are also reports of health workers of MCD succumbing to COVID after sanitation workers. 13 healthcare workers have lost their lives to the second wave of COVID in Delhi. Of these 13, five were doctors, two in South MCD, one in Swami Dayanand Hospital in East MCD and Professor of Medicine and Senior CMO at Hindu Rao Hospital.
Seven civic employees in the education department who were distributing rations have also lost their lives to COVID.
According to the Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Jayaprakash, a welfare fund is being created to help the families of each ‘Corona Warrior’ who died due to Covid-19.
Compensation of 5-10 lakhs will be offered to the affected families by the MCD and also one member of the family will get a job.
