Despatch's Scoop connection
The character of Joy Bag played by Manoj Bajpayee is inspired by a slain journalist named Jyotirmoy Dey aka J Dey. Jyotirmoy Dey was an investigative journalist for Mid-Day and also an expert on the Mumbai underworld. In 2011, J Dey was shot dead by bike-borne sharpshooters.
Over the years, many things written about the incident, and the webseries Scoop too weaves around his murder, and is based on the life of former journalist Jigna Vora, who was accused (and later acquitted) of the crime. In the Netflix series, actress Karishma Tanna plays the character of Jigna Vora.
Jigna Vora was a crime reporter who worked for a renowned newspaper in Mumbai. She studied law at Mumbai's Ruparel College and went on to do a diploma course. She was influenced to take up crime reporting by one of the faculty members. While she was working as an intern with a law firm, her parents forced her to leave the opportunity to marry a man who was supposedly an engineer and ran a printing press in Gujarat.
Later, when she realised that none of it was true, their marriage ended on a bad note. In 2004, she returned to Mumbai with her four-year-old son and decided to pursue her career in media. She started her journey in media in 2005 as a court reporter. However, things started to go haywire when Jigna was accused of plotting the murder of J Dey along with Chota Rajan. Jigna was slapped with the stringent MCOCA act by the Mumbai Police. Later, Jigna was acquitted from all charges. But, the murder of J Dey remained a mystery.
It is said that Jyotirmoy Dey was killed in Mumbai in June 2011 because he reported on the oil mafia and Chhota Rajan.
