Why is Dhanteras celebrated?

The term ‘Dhanteras’ is derived from two Sanskrit words ‘Dhan’ which means wealth, and ‘Teras’ which means the thirteenth day. Dhanteras marks the arrival of the Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. This festival is connected with Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean

According to scriptures, Goddess Lakshmi had come out from the ocean with a pot of gold that symbolizes wealth and prosperity during the Samudra Manthana. Along with her, Lord Kuber, the god of wealth, and Lord Dhanvantari, god of Ayurveda and health had also arrived.

Buying gold or silver jewellery and utensils is considered auspicious on this day. According to scriptures, this act is believed to bring prosperity into homes of the buyers.
