After being on the run for 36 days, Waris Punjab De Chief Amritpal Singh was arrested on Sunday morning at 6:45 am from Rode village in Punjab. Amritpal Singh was arrested in a joint operation conducted by Amritsar Police & Intelligence Wing of Punjab Police. As per IGP Sukhchain Singh Gill, the operation inputs of Amritpal Singh hiding in Moga was given by Punjab Police. However, to maintain sanctity, the Punjab Police did not enter Gurudwara Sahib and later the pro-Khalistan leader was arrested. Notably, a video is doing rounds on social media in which it can be seen that Amritpal Singh addressed a gathering at a Gurdwara in Rode village of Moga district before being arrested from Rode. For the unversed, Rode is the native village of pro-Khalistan leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, whom Amritpal Singh is a big follower. Not only this, Amritpal Singh is often called as "Bhindranwale 2.0" by his supporters due to his appearance and ideologies.

Addressing the media on Sunday, IGP Gill denied the reports saying that Amritpal Singh surrendered saying that he was arrested. Gill stated that "NSA warrants were issued against Amritpal Singh and those warrants have been executed today morning." IGP Gill further stated that the team got credible intel that Amritpal Singh was hiding in Rode village and following that Police surrounded the village in order to ban the fugitive. When there was no way to flee from the spot as the Police had surrounded the village, the Waris Punjab De Chief was finally arrested ending a long 36 days manhunt for the Punjab Police. As of now, Amritpal Singh has been sent to Assam's Dibrugarh jail, keeping security in mind.

The Pro-Khalistan leader and staunch follower of Bhindrawale, Amritpal Singh had been on the run since March 18, 2023 when a police crackdown was launched against him and his aides after the infamous Ajnala clash. The police on March 18 had launched a major crackdown against Amritpal Singh and members of his outfit 'Waris Punjab De'. Amritpal and his associates were booked under several criminal cases related to spreading disharmony among classes, attempting to murder, attacking police personnel, and creating obstructions in public servants' lawful discharge of duty. Not only this, NSA has also been invoked against Amritpal and his associate Papalpreet Singh was was arrested a few days back for helping and assisting him to flee from the Police nets.
