Diljit Dosanjh’s fans can’t wait to see their favorite superstar on big screen as his movie ‘Chamkila’ was also set to release soon. Chamkila directed by Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali is biopic of famous singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Apart from Diljit Dosanjh, the movie also stars Parineeti Chopra who will be playing role of Chamkila's wife Amarjot Kaur. Sadly, as per recent reports, Diljit Dosanjh starrer Chamkila has been banned from its theatrical release.
Reportedly, a local court ordered Reliance Entertainment, producer Imtiaz Ali, actor Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra not to broadcast, release, upload, or stream the biopic on Amar Singh Chamkila. This decision came by the court after late producer Gurdev Singh Randhawa's sons, Isjeet and Sanjot Randhawa filed a petition against the release of Chamkila film. Civil Judge, Senior Division, Harsimranjit Singh's court made the directives.
Giving an insight into what happened, on 12th October 2012, Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur took Rs.5 lakh and gave Gurdev Singh Randhawa the right to make biopic on Amar Singh Chamkila. On 3rd November 2022, Gurdev Singh Randhawa passed away, post which his sons decided to make the biopic. As result to this, Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife started making excuses to put the shoot of a biopic on hold which made the producers suspicious. Gurdev Singh Randhawa’s son later discovered that the accused were already working on a film on Chamkila and Bibi Amarjot Kaur while plotting together. Therefore, they filed a petition against Imtiaz Ali, Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
Who was Amar Singh Chamkila?
Amar Singh Chamkila was one the legendary singers and musicians in the Punjabi film industry. He was regarded as one of the best live performers and has been extremely popular with the village audience. Various times his bookings outnumbered the number of days in a month. Amar Singh Chamkila mainly wrote controversial songs on about extra-marital relationships, drinking, drug use, and the hot tempers of Punjabi men. He gained a controversial reputation with his detractors regarding his music obscene, and his supporters regarding it a truthful commentary on Punjabi culture and society.
Both Chamkila and Amarjot were killed on 8th March 1988. Reportedly, a gang of motorcyclists fired several rounds on the couple leading to their death. However, no arrests were ever made with connection to the shooting and the case was never solved. The reson behind assassination is still a mystery. Allegedly, Amar Singh Chamkila’s murder was arranged by other artists due to his immense popularity. While some other stated that During the 1980s Khalistan movement, militants found Chamkila's lyrics objectionable and therefore arranged for his murder.
