As tropical cyclones can last for a week or more and there can be more than one cyclone in a region at a time. Therefore, to avoid any kind of confusion forecasters name the cyclones with different names according to the rules at the regional level.
Nations in the Northern Indian oceans have adopted a new naming system in the year 2000, the names are given alphabetically country-wise and should be gender-neutral. The common rule is that the proposed name by World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) members is later approved by the tropical cyclone regional bodies at their annual or biannual meetings.
The WMO for Asia and Pacific Panel on Tropic Cyclones (PTC) has 13 members, these are India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Maldives, Oman, Sri Lanka, Iran, Qatar, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

If the storm causes more damage to life and property, any member of WMO’s hurricane, typhoon, and tropical cyclone can request to change the name of the cyclone, the given name can be withdrawn from the naming list. A replacement name is then submitted to the committee.
