The incident took place in the village of Begowal, Punjab when Sun-Inspector Ranjinder Singh ran his car over an Active and a scooter in the late evening. The activa driver, who was identified as retired ASI Nirmal Singh, died on the spot. Following activa, the car also hit a scooter rider who suffered with serious and severe injuries.
After hitting both the two-wheelers, SI fell unconscious on the road and his car overturned and crashed into the roadside fields.
The police was immediately called at the crime location and took the inebriated police officer to civil hospital for medical examination. Notably, the Begowal police have started the investigation.
The details regarding the incident were shared by DSP Bholath, Karnail Singh and SHO Randeep Kumar. As per the police officers, around 5 pm on Saturday, SI Rajinder Singh, a resident of village Madi Buchhiyan (Guru Hargobindpur), was driving his Brezza car (PB-06BG-0993) from Begowal towards Nadala in a drunken state. When he reached the village of Dolowal, he struck an Activa scooter carrying retired ASI Nirmal Singh, who was taking milk home, and then hit another scooter rider. Both riders of the two-wheeler were severely injured.
They added that retired ASI Nirmal Singh died on the spot. Meanwhile, SI Rajinder Singh’s car lost control and overturned into the fields by the roadside. SHO further mentioned that the police arrived promptly, took the drunken SI into custody, and sent him to the civil hospital for a medical test. It is mentioned that Rajinder Singh is posted in the Excise Department at Jayantipur under the Amritsar Rural jurisdiction.
The SHO also mentioned that they could not gather details about the injured scooter rider yet, but the police are investigating further. After the incident, locals gathered around the accident site. Eyewitnesses stated that the police officer was so drunk that he fell unconscious and had no awareness of his surroundings. It was reported that angry locals also beat him up. SHO Randeep Kumar confirmed that the police are investigating the case, and appropriate action will be taken against the accused.
