US Elections 2024 Voting and time taken to announce results in the past
As per US media reports, voting will be completed by 7 pm on November 5 (4:30 am on November 6 according to US time). After this, the counting of votes will start. In general, the results are out 1 day after voting.
However, in the 2020 elections, the results were out 4 days after voting. Due to the COVID pandemic, about 60% of the people voted through email. This took more time to count the votes. This time the election results can come in 1 or 2 days.
How the winner is decided in the US Elections?
The winner in the US election is decided keeping the difference of votes into account. To be precise, if the difference in votes between the candidates at the time of counting is more, then results can come soon. If there is a difference of more than 50 thousand votes between the two candidates in a state and only 20 thousand votes are left to count, then the leading candidate is declared the winner. This helps in getting the results soon. If the victory margin between the two is less, then according to American law, the counting will be done again to confirm the results.
All Eyes on the Swing States
Swing states will decide the President of America. In the US election, both parties are focusing the most on 7 swing states. Voters of these states can swing towards any party, i.e. they can turn the tables. Therefore, both parties have put their full focus on winning these states.
There are a total of 538 electoral votes i.e. seats in the 50 states of America and the capital Washington DC. There are 93 seats in the swing states alone, while to win the election, Trump or Kamala need to win 270 seats. In such a situation, the swing states decide the President of America.
US Elections 2024 Results Schedule
Every state will declare the winner separately. Hence, it is possible that it will take almost a week to announce US Elections 2024 winner. As per BBC, the earliest call is likely to be about Georgia, which requires that all early votes be counted by 8 pm ET. In Georgia, the polls will close at 19:00 EST (5:30 am IST on Wednesday), where early and mail-in ballots will be counted first, ahead of in-person votes.
North Carolina, Michigan, and Arizona, which allow processing of early ballots before Election Day, are likely to follow. In North Carolina, the polls will close 30 minutes after Georgia, and the results are expected to be announced before the end of the night.
As per IANS, if there are no wider margins of victory and the election numbers follow the polls all of which give leads within the margin of error -- with crucial swing state Pennsylvania’s as narrow as 0.4 percent for Trump -- it may take days or even weeks to sort out the contested results with recounts. Traditionally, the candidate losing the election accepts defeat even before the official announcement of the results if the outcome is clear. However, Donald Trump has not admitted he lost even four years after President Joe Biden defeated him in 2020.
