Electricity price hike in Punjab after LS elections; New rates applicable from June 16, know details

Electricity has become expensive in Punjab after the Lok Sabha elections. The State Electricity Regulatory Commission has determined the new tariff charges for the financial year 2024-25. According to this, the rates have been increased by 10 to 12 paise per unit of domestic and 15 paise of industrial. The electricity rate for tube well connection has been increased by 15 paise.

New tariff orders were issued for the financial year 2024-25. These orders, released on Friday, outline the the Aggregate Revenue Requirement (ARR) for FY 2024-25, and the applicable charges for Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL).

The new rates as announced by the PSERC will be effective from June 16. However, the facility of 300 units free will continue. According to the new rates, domestic consumers of up to 7 KW will have to pay 10 to 12 paise more per unit for power consumption above 300 units. There has been no increase in electricity rates from 7 KW to 100 KW.

Currently in Punjab, every family gets 300 units of free electricity in one month and 600 units in two months. If a family consumes more than 600 units of electricity, the full bill is charged. If this happens, the consumer will have to pay the increased rate of electricity bill. According to the new rate, every family will now have to pay an additional Rs 30 to 40.

Farmers will also get expensive electricity from June 16. The rates of tubewell connections have been increased by 15 paise per unit. The electricity rates for industry in Punjab have also increased by 15 paise per unit.

The new tariff applies from June 16, 2024 to March 31, 2025, with the previous tariff applicable up to June 15, 2024. From January 1, 2024, this system will extend to Domestic Supply consumers with loads more than 20 kW.

* There has been no increase from 7 to 100 kilowatts. 2000 units of electricity of Golden Temple-Durgiana Temple is free. Above that, a charge of Rs 6.41 per unit will have to be paid.

Small Power : The rates of all units till 20 kW connection have been increased from Rs 5.67 to Rs 5.82 per unit.

Medium Supply: Rates of all units from 20 kW to 100 kW have been increased from Rs 6.10 to Rs 6.25 per unit.

Large Supply:  

General Industry:

  • The per unit rate of electricity from 100 to 1 thousand kilowatts was increased from Rs 6.45 to Rs 6.60.
  • Rates from 1000 to 2500 kilowatts are Rs 6.55
  • It was increased to Rs 6.70 per unit.
  • Rates above 2500 kW were increased from Rs 6.67 per unit to Rs 6.82.

PIU Industry

  • Rate per unit from 100 to 1 thousand kilowatts was increased from Rs 6.49 to Rs 6.64.
  • Per unit rate from 1 thousand to 2500 kilowatts
  • It was increased from Rs 6.80 to Rs 6.95.
  • For more than 2500 kW, the per unit rate was increased from Rs 6.89 to Rs 7.04.
  • Per unit rate increased from Rs 5.24 to Rs 5.31 per unit for all types of industries from 10 pm to 6 am
