Ethiopian Disaster: Indian Government grounds Boeing 737 MAX Planes

SpiceJet's shares sunk to 5.5 per cent in the first few minutes of trade while Jet was trading even 2.2 per cent lower

The US aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co's 737 MAX aircraft are being grounded by the Indian Government. The move came immediately after the Ministry of Civil Aviation order came, late on Tuesday. The US co. is under scrutiny since the fatal crash of a plane of the same type in Ethiopia on Sunday. "These planes will be grounded till appropriate modifications and safety measures are undertaken to ensure their safe operations", said the ministry in a Twitter post.

The top two Indian airlines, namely Jet Airways Ltd and SpiceJet Ltd operate the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. SpiceJet's spokesman said on Wednesday that SpiceJet has suspended Boeing 737 Max operations after the regulator's decision to ground the aircraft. "We will be working with the regulator and the manufacturer to attain normalcy in our operations", he added.

On Tuesday, the European Union's aviation safety regulator had suspended all flights in the bloc by Boeing 737 MAX planes, joining the masses being suspicious about the aircraft safety.

SpiceJet's shares sunk to 5.5 per cent in the first few minutes of trade while Jet Airways was trading even 2.2 per cent lower. Also, the shares of low-cost airline InterGlobe Aviation rose 2.9 per cent as it operates Airbus planes.
