The suo moto proceedings initiated to examine any "larger conspiracy" regarding the allegations of sexual harassment against former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi have been closed by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The case was closed by a bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice V Ramasubramanian. The bench was headed by Justice Kaul.
Justice AK Patnaik who was the judge of Supreme Court submitted a report that conspiracy behind the sexual harassment allegations cannot be "ruled-out," according to a report published in LiveLaw.
The report submitted by Patnaik also opines that the allegations against former CJI could have been leveled due to tough stances taken by him during his tenure. References were cited where Intelligence Bureau input had given input that as Justice Gogoi drove the Assam-NRC process, many people were unhappy.
The benching after making observations from the report of Justice Patnaik said, "the veracity of the allegations leveled by lawyer Utsav Singh Bains could not be verified completely due to the limited access of records and other collaborative material."
Hence the bench closed the case by saying, "there is no requirement to keep the case going on."
