People above 18 years of age are being vaccinated as vaccination is the key to win the battle against Covid19 pandemic. However, people might witness minor side-effects after taking Covid jab such as fever, headache, etc.

There is a lot of information doing rounds on the internet regarding dos and don’ts before and after receiving the vaccine jab. Meanwhile, World Health Organization (WHO) has warned against taking painkillers before administering a vaccine shot.

WHO’s statement came after several fake posts that suggest taking a painkiller before getting the Covid-19 vaccine to avoid possible side effects had gone viral.

Why one shouldn’t take painkiller before taking vaccine?

According to WHO, the use of painkillers before administering the jab would not prevent any side effects. In fact, it may affect the effectiveness of the coronavirus vaccine.

A WHO spokesperson said, “to prevent side-effects, it is not recommended to take paracetamol or painkiller before getting the Covid-19 vaccine. However, in case of side-effects such as headache, fever, muscle pain, you can take pain killers or paracetamol after vaccination."

Should you take routine drugs and medications before jab?

Certain health issues or ongoing therapies may require a person to take painkillers regularly in addition to other medications. While persons with pre-existing health conditions should get the vaccine first, if you take pain medicines on a regular basis, you should not stop taking them to get the vaccine unless your doctor has permitted you.

Before getting the COVID-19 vaccine, consult your doctor to see whether you need to cut your dosage, stop taking certain medications, or switch to another one.

How to minimize vaccine side effects?

Though the side-effects of vaccine are minor and rare, if you are still uncomfortable or afraid all you can do is make yourself aware of what to expect, prepare yourself, eat well and have a good sleep.

Can painkillers be taken after receiving jab?

As mentioned earlier, covid vaccine side-effects may include fever, body aches, headache or muscle pain and to relieve these you can use painkillers or paracetamol after vaccination.
