Fact Check: No revised examination guidelines issued by UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday has quashed the reports of revising the examination guidelines in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

UGC has issued the notice claiming that “incorrect news regarding UGC guidelines on examination has been floating on print and digital media.”

In an official notification the top education body cleared that, “UGC has not yet issued any guidelines on examination recently and the news is incorrect.”

UGC has further clarified that it had issued the guidelines on Examinations and Academic Calendar from time to time during last year.

"Further UGC vide letter dated May 6, 2021, has requested the universities to keep the offline examination in abeyance during the month of May 2021," it added.

It may be noted here that last week, the UGC had directed the universities to not conduct the offline exams in May in the wake of overwhelming cases of Covid-19. It further added that the institutes can conduct online examinations after assessing the local conditions.

The UGC had issued the letter earlier to all universities and colleges stating that during the ongoing Covdi-19 pandemic, the health and safety of everyone is of utmost importance.

Apart from this, the Education Ministry had directed all Centre-funded institutions (IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIMs, etc) to drop the idea of conducting offline examination in May at the side for some time. Notably, the Education Ministry will review the situation again in the first week of June 2021 to decide on the conduct of examinations.
