In a bizarre development, the Punjab Police on Saturday arrested a man named Lovejeet who demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore from a businessman in Mohali. 24-year-old Lovejeet posed as the brother of absconding Gangster Goldy Brar and demanded Rs 1 crore extortion money from a local automobile showroom owner. An FIR has been registered at Police Station Sohana under the jurisdiction of SAS Nagar Police on the complaint of the victim.
As per the official statement issued on Punjab DGP's X handle-
The preliminary probe revealed that the accused used virtual numbers and social media applications to mask his identity and make extortion calls in an attempt to evade police detection. In many recent cases, it has been observed that unknown criminals, with no real links to gangsters, are exploiting public fear by falsely claiming such associations.
Punjab DGP's post also reads, "We appeal to the people to immediately inform the police whenever extortion calls are received so that law can take its course."
It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav welcomed terrorist Happy Pasia's arrest by the FBI in the US. DGP Gaurav Yadav in his address shared a video in which he informed, "Between 2023–2025, Happy Passia played a central role in orchestrating targeted killings, grenade attacks on police establishments, and extortion across #Punjab and other states. His arrest on April 17, 2025, in Sacramento, USA by FBI & ICE, is the outcome of excellent international cooperation and exchange of information between the United States & India.
The FBI said on Friday that Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, entered the US illegally and used burner phones to evade capture. Hailing from Passia village in Ajnala, the terrorist has been linked to at least 16 grenade attacks in Punjab, targeting police posts, religious sites, and residences.
