A letter was going viral on social media in the name of Khalistan supporter and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, who won the Sri Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat of Punjab in the 2024 Parliamentary elections. The hand-written letter was claimed to have been written by Amritpal and addressed to Lok Sabha speaker, Om Birla, asking him for temporary release from jail to take his oath as Member of Parliament.
However, a post has been shared on Amritpal’s social media account regarding the letter. It stated that a fake letter a fake letter in the name of Amritpal Singh Khalsa is being circulated on social media.
“A forged letter, allegedly from Bhai Amritpal Singh, is being circulated. It urges the recipient to intervene and pressure authorities to bring him to Delhi for the oath.” claimed the viral post. In the alleged fake letter from Amritpal the Speaker has been requested to administer the oath of office to Amritpal Singh in Delhi. “This is another example of the ongoing malicious propaganda aimed at discrediting him over the past year and a half. Rest assured, we will reveal the individuals responsible for these malicious activities at the appropriate time”, the post went on to say.
Amritpal won the election from Khadoor Sahib seat
Amritpal Singh, a resident of Jallupur Khera village, about 40 km from Amritsar, is the chief of Waris Punjab De organization, originally founded by singer Deep Sidhu. He became MP from Khadoor Sahib seat by defeating Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira.
On 23 February 2023, a crowd of thousands of people entered Ajnala police station in Amritsar under the leadership of Amritpal Singh. After this, a non-bailable warrant was issued against the radical Sikh preacher. On March 18, Amritpal fled from his home prompting the police along with the investigating agencies to search for him for a month. On 23 April, Punjab Police arrested Amritpal from Moga.
Since then, Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam. The National Security Act (NSA) has been imposed on him for supporting Khalistani ideology. Amritpal was not able to get permission to come out of jail for campaigning, despite this he got more than 4 lakh votes, winning the Lok Sabha seat by a record margin.
