Police have arrested six family members of the terrorist Lakhbir Singh in connection with a Rs 2 crore extortion demand in Model Town, Jalandhar, Punjab. The arrested individuals include Lakhbir Singh's mother, Parminder Kaur, sister Jaspal Kaur, constable Brother-in-law Ranjot Singh, along with his associate Yadvinder's mother Baljit Kaur Singh, and sister Hussain Preet Kaur.
The arrests were made following a comprehensive raid conducted by multiple teams of the Jalandhar Police. The raid, which lasted several hours, targeted the homes of the relatives of the accused. The police have seized information related to bank accounts and mobile phones of the suspects as part of the investigation.
All accused underwent a medical examination at the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar and were subsequently produced in court. Although the police requested a two-day remand, the court, influenced by the defense lawyer's argument, granted only a one-day remand. The police will present the accused in court again today.
In recent weeks, two separate cases have been registered against Canada-based terrorist Lakhbir Singh alias Landa Harike and his associate Yadvinder Singh at different police stations in Jalandhar. The latest extortion demand was also directed at a well-known businessman in the city.
This incident is not isolated. Approximately 20 days ago, another extortion demand targeted a prominent business man in Jalandhar's Leather Complex. The Jalandhar City Police arrested several individuals, including Gurpreet Singh, Gopi, Jagroop Singh Jhupa, Bhupendra Singh, and Bunty, who are residents of Tarn Taran and Hoshiarpur. They were charged under relevant sections for their involvement in extortion and other criminal activities. Commissioner of Police Sparsh Sharma stated that substantial evidence was recovered, linking these individuals Landa. The suspects admitted to planning further extortion from other prominent businessmen in the city before their arrest.
Who is Lakhbir Singh?
Lakhbir Singh, also known as Landa, hails from the village of Harike in the Tarn Taran district near Amritsar. He fled to Canada in 2017 and engaged in various criminal activities, including attacks. He established contact with Pakistan-based terrorist Rinda and joined Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), working with 23 rebels. His criminal activities expanded to include extortion, drug and arms smuggling, and the establishment of a terrorist module. Multiple criminal cases, including attempted murder, extortion, drug smuggling, kidnapping, and possession of illegal arms, have been registered against him across Punjab.
