International level shooter, Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu allegedly died by suicide on Thursday (December 9) morning. The 17-year-old shot herself with her licenced pistol inside her home in Punjab's Faridkot.

Sandhu, according to authorities, was disappointed with her performance in the just-wrapped 64th National Shooting Championship.

Briefing the incident to a top Indian media outlet, Inspector Harjinder Singh, SHO of the Faridkot City police station said, "On Thursday morning, we received a call from the control room regarding a girl who allegedly shot herself at her home in Gali number 4 in Faridkot's Harinder Nagar. When we arrived, we discovered the body of Khush Seerat Kaur Sandhu, a 17-year-old girl. She shot herself with her.22 pistol.”

According to her family, she was upset with her performance at the nationals earlier this week in Delhi. However, the police said that no suicide note was found.

“We handed the body to the family after the autopsy and began the investigation. There was no suicide note found," stated Inspector Harjinder Singh, SHO of the Faridkot City police station.

Sandhu began her career as a swimmer but turned to shooting four years ago. Her father, Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, is a teacher in a government school, while her mother, Navdeep Kaur Sandhu, works in the research centre of the Punjab Agricultural University.

"Her performance at this year's nationals was subpar. She did not, however, show any evident signs of disappointment. We could have counselled her if she had told us what she was going through,” said Sandhu’s father.

“It happened while she was studying on the ground floor, where her grandmother was asleep. The rest of us were on the first floor. We found out about this in the morning,” he added.

Faridkot Police has opened an investigation under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
