The seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections occurred on June 1 across 54 constituencies in 8 states/UTs in India, including all 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab. In Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib constituency, a voter turnout of 61.18% was seen. This was a decrease from the 2019 polls, which saw a 65.68% voter turnout.
In 2019, 67.27% of the male electors cast their vote, 63.88% of the females cast their vote and 32.26% of the transgenders cast their vote. Fatehgarh Sahib is also seeing a 4-way battle between the major political parties. This includes candidates from BJP and SAD, who are contesting the elections with their own candidate for the first time since 1996. BJP is putting their hopes behind Gejja Ram Valmiki, who will be going up against SAD’s Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, AAP’s Gurpreet Singh and Congress’ Dr. Amar Singh.
Dr. Amar Singh had secured the victory in 2019 for Congress with 41.75% of the votes, SAD’s Darbara Singh Guru. However, in 2014 the parliamentary seat was secured by AAP’s Harinder Singh Khalsa. In 2009, Congress took the win on the back of Sukhdev Singh Libra with 46.96% of the votes. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, Fatehgarh Sahib saw polling in 1,820 polling stations across the constituency. Of the 15,39,155 electors, 8,16,775 were male, 7,22,353 were female, and 27 were transgender.
