Sushil Kumar, a two-time Olympic medalist, is being investigated after his name was linked to a brawl that resulted in the death of a wrestler inside the Chhatrasal Stadium complex in north Delhi, police said on Wednesday.
According to them, Sushil Kumar, the county's only individual Olympic medalist, was named in the FIR.
A 23-year-old wrestler died and two of his friends were wounded, according to police, after they were allegedly violently assaulted by other wrestlers inside Chhatrasal Stadium in the city's northern outskirts.
According to police, an information about firing inside the Chhatrasal Stadium was received at Model Town policestation on the night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
As police arrived, they discovered five cars abandoned in the stadium's parking lot.
During the investigation, it was discovered that a quarrel had occurred in the parking area between Sushil Kumar, Ajay, Prince, Sonu, Sagar, Amit, and others. Following that, police at Model Town police station filed a case under specific parts of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act, according to a statement.
"Both the crime scene and all five vehicles were examined. During the search, one Scorpio was discovered with a double barrel loaded gun and five live bullets, as well as two wooden sticks.
"All the five vehicles and weapons of offence were seized. The crime scene was further inspected by forensic experts of FSL, Rohini," Guriqbal Singh Sidhu, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest), said.
During the inquiry, information about Sagar's death and Sonu's injury was obtained from the Civil Lines Trauma Centre, and sections 302, 365, and 120B of the IPC were reported, he said.
To track down the suspected offenders, several teams have been created. Technical proof has been collected in relation to this incident. The information on the recovered vehicles is also being gathered.
In this case, they said, one Prince Dalal, 24, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, was apprehended, along with one double-barrel pistol. Two double-barrel weapons, seven live bullets, two wooden sticks, and five cars were recovered, according to police.
According to official reports, the incident occurred as a result of a property dispute in the Model Town district.
"It was not a case of trespassing. The accused took the victims inside the stadium where they assaulted them in the parking area. Sushil Kumar was present at the spot when the incident happened, however, police are investigating his role in the assault," an official source said.
When contacted for comment on the matter, Sushil Kumar did not answer his phone.
