With Vehicular pollution already being the biggest contributor to the decline in the air quality of Bangalore, a major fire broke out near the Aero India Yelahanka air base destroying more than 300 vehicles in the parking.
The reason for the fire was reportedly a lit cigarette disposed on the grass in an open field as told by the officials.
There were huge plumes of smoke near the Yelahanka air base where more than 100 aircrafts were parked for the Aero India Air show which is set to be concluded tomorrow.
Senior officer MN Reddi reported that the fire spread due to dry grass and dry winds starting at 11:55 am in the morning which has been controlled only after destroying more than 300 vehicles.
"Fire in the open field parking lot of aero show. Nearly 20 cars burnt. Fire fighting operations by Chief Fire Officer and 10 water tenders staff under way (sic)," Mr Reddi tweeted.
Defence Ministry has also issued a statement after the fire broke out.
"IAF immediately launched one helicopter for aerial assessment, the helicopter assisted by providing effective directions to fight the fire. The fire was brought under control by deploying more than 12 fire fighting vehicles," the statement said.
The incident comes within a week of two Indian Air Force Suryakiran Aerobatic aircrafts colliding mid air in which two soldiers were killed.
