In a major development, Punjab's former CM Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday reached to Vigilance Bureau office for the second time in Mohali in the disproportionate assets case. The former Chief Minister of Punjab was grilled for approximately 7 hours when he was called for questioning for the first time. During that time, a proforma of nearly about 50 questions was prepared and given to him. In Vigilance's crackdown against Charanjit Singh Channi, the former CM had lambasted the AAP government, alleging that 'this government was behaving worse than the Mughals. They want to humiliate and defame me. You can’t build a case without any basis. I stand by what I said earlier.’ Furthermore, Channi had accused the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government of carrying out a ‘political vendetta’ and said that he was not scared of the probe and investigation.
This year, earlier in January, the Vigilance office started the investigation upon movable and immovable assets of former CM Channi. Before the Jalandhar byelections, the Vigilance Bureau had summoned Channi on April 12 but on the former Chief Minister’s request, the vigilance bureau changed the date to April 20. During the 7 hours of questioning, Vigilance had handed him a proforma of 50 questions which he was supposed to fill and return but he never visited Vigilance office again until Tuesday (today).
Reportedly, Channi was asked questions about his businesses and details of properties that he, his family members, and relatives have. Channi was also asked about the reasons for staying abroad for 8 to 9 months and if he has made investments in Canada and the USA.
Now this is the second time when Vigilance summoned the former CM Channi. It is expected that the proforma will be returned back by Channi today through which the further investigation will take place.
