In a significant development in Punjab's political landscape, Chandan Grewal, the head of the Safai Mazdoor Union and former Akali Dal leader, has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Grewal, who had previously contested assembly elections from Kartarpur on an AAP ticket but lost, was welcomed into the party by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who was present at his home in Jalandhar.
Along with Grewal, Mann also welcomed leaders of other employee organizations, including Municipal Corporation sweepers, into the party. The move is being seen as a major boost to AAP's prospects in the state, which is scheduled to hold assembly elections in 2022.

Speaking on the occasion, Mann said that Grewal was an old leader of his and that he was happy to see him return "home" to the AAP. He added that the party was working to bring back those who had previously been associated with it, in a bid to foster development in the state.
