Former Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, held a press conference and stated that the upcoming Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election on May 10 will be a test of the Modi government's performance nationally. He also criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab for its alleged political vindictiveness and sending opposition leaders to jail without proper investigation.

He shared an incident where he met with then Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who asked him about not taking action against the sand mafia. He said that he handed over a list of those involved in running the sand mafia and told her that there would be no government in Punjab if he took action as per the names in the list.

Capt Amarinder Singh also spoke about the Amritpal Singh issue, stating that the AAP government was over 30 days late in catching him. He criticized the AAP for indulging in politics of vindictiveness with its repeated vigilance enquiries.

When asked about the AAP government's performance so far, Capt Amarinder Singh replied, "Which government and what performance?" He also questioned the law and order situation under AAP, stating that arresting people and having 50 people in front of the vigilance department is not maintaining law and order.

Captain Amarinder Singh merged his Punjab Lok Congress with the BJP in September 2022 after unsuccessfully contesting last year's assembly election. He cited the BJP's commitment to national security as one of the reasons for joining the party. He said that he consulted his party colleagues before joining the BJP for "Punjab's future".
