The results of the
Punjab Assembly elections 2022 got declared yesterday. Aam Aadmi Party's
youngest candidate Anmol Gagan Mann from the Kharar Assembly seat has won the
election with a huge margin. Anmol Gagan Mann is a Punjabi Singer by
profession. She defeated Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Ranjit Singh Gill
by a huge margin of 37718 votes.
She contested in the
Assembly elections for the first time and won. When she was given the ticket
for election, many party workers have opposed the decision, accusing her of
being an outsider. She competed with 16 other candidates for the seat. It is
the seat from which the maximum number of candidates contested.
After her victory,
Mann’s supporters distributed Laddooos while celebrating. She joined the Aam
Aadmi Party in 2020. Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind
Kejriwal had also campaigned for her in Kharar. On the counting day, Aam Aadmi
Party maintained its lead in the early trends which continued till the last.
Anmol Gagan Mann got a total of 78067 votes.
Aam Aadmi Party
emerges as the single largest party in Punjab by winning 92seats out of 117
seats. This is the first time in Punjab’s history that a party won
single-handedly after 25 years. Earlier, in 1997, the BJP-Akali alliance won 93
seats out of 117 seats. On the other hand, in the 2017 elections, Congress won
77 seats.
Bhagwant
Mann is set to become the new Chief Minister of Punjab. While AAP scored
three-fourths of the seats, the Congress won 18, SAD 3, BJP 2, and BSP 1. An
Independent also emerged victoriously.
