Gas Leak Incident: Jalandhar Police registers FIR against owner and officials from the Municipal Corporation, Factory, Electricity, and Pollution Departments

After the incident of ammonia gas leak occurred in the ice factory in Jalandhar, FIR has been registered by the police against the factory owner and other officials.

On Saturday, 21st September, a tragic incident of gas leak occurred at the ice factory in Jalandhar. Ammonia gas got leaked in the ice factory in Jalandhar, Punjab. The incident took place when a gas line at the factory malfunctioned and released the toxic ammonia gas into the air.

Four workers were trapped inside the factory and two migrant workers who were passing by the factory, fainted due to the intensity of the ammonia gas. The Jalandhar police have registered the case after one person died due to the gas leak in the ice factory.

The factory owner Nini Kumar Jain, Municipal Corporation officials, Punjab factory department officials, Punjab industry department officials, Electricity and pollution department officials’ names have been registered in the FIR. The factory owner Nini Kumar Jain is the resident of Colony number 32, Jalandhar Cantt.

During the ammonia gas leak, Multiple people complained about having issues in breathing and irritation in the eyes. These issues happened because of the ammonia gas leak in the factory. The gas affected people who were even more than 1 kilometre far from the ice factory. People felt uneasiness and suffocation.

An eyewitness said, “People started fainting all around, and when we moved closer, we realized gas was leaking from the factory. A few people on bicycles fell to the ground, causing public panic.”

Many fire tenders and ambulances quickly reached the ice factory and then rescued six people from the factory. Out of the six people, one person died. Others are now in stable condition.

A woman who went to buy medicines in the nearby medicine shop, fainted because of the gas leak. She said, “I had come to get medicine. But suddenly I started suffocating.” After she got unconscious, the locals helped her. After some time, she regained consciousness and felt normal.

The Jalandhar police have sealed the factory and diverted traffic from that area as a precautionary measure. The officers said, “The gas leak has been plugged, and the situation is under control.”

The sub-divisional magistrate has got the order to submit a report of the ammonia gas leak incident in the ice factory within 15 days.
