Police have arrested 14 girls, including 6 Nigerians, who were blackmailing and robbing passers-by at night on GT Road in Phagwara sub-division of Kapurthala, Punjab. Satnampura police station has registered two separate cases and started investigation against them.
Cash worth Rs 2700, looted from passersby, has also been recovered from the possession of these girls. According to the police, some of these girls are also involved in prostitution.
According to investigating officer ASI Darshan Singh, the police had set up a blockade at the Law Gate in Mahedu village of Phagwara. During this time, two persons, Varinder Singh, resident of Budha Theh Beas and Arvinder Kumar alias Sabi, resident of Nanak Nagari police station, Satnampura, complained to the police about the girls.
SHO Gaurav Dheer of Satnampura police station said that these girls used to come to Law Gate from Jalandhar at night and used to blackmail and rob people by threatening them with knives and other weapons. When met with resistance, they would threaten the victims saying that they would implicate them in a false case.
He told that some of these girls are also involved in prostitution business. Investigation is being done in this matter. Information related to passport and visa of these foreign girls is being obtained.
SP Phagwara Rupinder Kaur and DSP Jaspreet Singh said that the girls caught are not students. 6 girls are residents of Nigeria and Ghana. Whether their visas are valid or not is also being investigated. It is pertinent to note that Phagwara police had earlier arrested 32 girls in two different cases. Of which 14 belonged to Nigeria, Thailand and Ghana.
