The much-awaited docuseries Gold & Greed: The Hunt for Fenn's Treasure was released on Netflix on March 27, 2025. The 3-episodes series showcases how the United States went into a frenzy after author & art collector Forrest Fenn published his memoir The Thrill of the Chase. The catch was Fenn had written a poem on the last page of the book that contained a clue of a hidden treasure chest containing emeralds, gold, diamonds, rubies, etc worth $1 to $5 million. At first, it sounded like a publicity gimmick to skyrocket the sale of the book, but when it turned out to be true, hundreds of Americans went on a treasure chest hunt. Now, the question arises did anyone find Forrest Fenn's treasure? Below is all you need to know-
Did anyone find Forrest Fenn's treasure?
The answer is yes. As per US media reports, a 32-year-old Michigan native and medical student named Jack Stuef was the person who had finally solved Fenn’s poem, ultimately finding his million-dollar treasure chest. In June 2020, Fenn announced that the treasure had been found. And that December, the finder revealed himself, writing: “My name is Jack Stuef and I am the finder of the Forrest Fenn Treasure.”
Before going on a treasure hunt, Jack Stuef was a medical student but he was always interested in adventures. Initially, he was focused on comedy writing when he attended Georgetown University as a young adult. Following his graduation in December 2009, Stuef started a career as a writer. But he faced a few minor controversies early in his career — he wrote a Buzzfeed article about cartoonist Matthew Inman, who claimed Stuef’s article was “so blatantly wrong it borders on being libelous,” and made a poorly received joke about one of Sarah Palin’s children.
After leaving his career in media, Jack Stuef enrolled in medical school. In 2018, while scrolling through Twitter (now X), Stuef discovered Forrest Fenn’s treasure hunt. After hours, days, months and years of reading Fenn's memoir and poem, he finally cracked the code.
In 2020, Stuef took his hunch to the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming to see if he could find the Forrest Fenn Treasure at long last.
Jack Stuef was quoted saying, "I figured out the location where he wished to die (and thus, where his treasure was) back in 2018." He further wrote, "but it took me many months to figure out the exact spot. This treasure hunt was the most frustrating experience of my life… I spent about 25 full days of failure looking for the treasure at that location before getting it."
Jack Stuef found Forrest Fenn’s treasure on June 6, 2020. He also met Fenn along with the treasure. Interestingly, 2 months after his treasure was found, Fenn died in September 2020.
