Late last night, it was reported that the global smash-hit series 'Squid Game' has received three nominations for the forthcoming awards event. The survival drama will compete for Best Drama Series against 'The Morning Show,' 'Pose,' 'Succession,' and ‘Lupin.’

O Yeong-su, along with Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass of 'The Morning Show,' Kieran Culkin of 'Succession,' and Brett Goldstein of 'Ted Lasso,' was nominated for best supporting actor in television.
The statement was made almost in the midst of the controversy that has kept the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) on its toes since it came under fire for its racially homogeneous makeup and suspected corruption in a blockbuster Los Angeles Times investigation earlier this year.
Through nods to women and people of colour in the directing and acting categories, the HFPA attempted to be more inclusive. Although non-English foreign TV series such as 'Squid Game' (South Korean) and 'Lupin' (French) have received the most attention for their nominations, satirical black comedy 'Succession' reigned supreme with five nominations.
The nominations, on the other hand, are not unexpected. According to reports, 'Squid Game' has emerged as a strong candidate in the US year-end awards season, with the possibility of becoming the first Korean-made TV series to win a prestigious award.
The 2021 Gotham Awards earlier nominated 'Squid Game' for two categories: Breakthrough Series: Long Format (above 40 minutes) and Outstanding Performance in a New Series for its main actor, Lee Jung-jae, earlier this year.
Since the Gotham Awards nominations, American media outlets have raised the chances of 'Squid Game' winning a slew of major awards, including the Critics Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
