New Zealand's ace opener Martin Guptill suffered a tie injury during the game against Pakistan on Tuesday, which might be a big blow. Haris Rauf dismissed him at 17 after a delivery from him injured his big toe.

"We'll see how he scrubs up overnight," coach Gary Stead said after the game to reporters in the United Arab Emirates.

"At the end of the game, he appeared to be in some discomfort, and it may take 24 to 48 hours to see how he responds."

The injury is New Zealand's second setback after paceman Lockie Ferguson was ruled out of the tournament due to a calf muscle tear injury on Tuesday.

Stead expressed his disappointment that the Technical Committee of the International Cricket Council had not confirmed Adam Milne as Ferguson's substitute in time for the Pakistan match.

"We tried quite hard today to get our substitute player across the line with the ICC, but it wasn't to be," he continued.

"That was particularly unfortunate for us since Adam Milne had been lined up as a like-for-like replacement. We'll follow up with them to get more information on their decision.”

Stead was pleased with his team's performance against Pakistan, which had defeated India in their opener, but said that the other teams in Group 2 were now competing for second place and a place in the semi-finals.

"I would believe that Pakistan are now the hot favourites in our group to be the number one seed, and the rest of us are battling it out for the second slot, making the India game very important," he added.

"It's sometimes necessary to lose one in order to discover what's vital to you. We would have put ourselves back on the right track if we can defeat India."
