Hariyali Teej is a festival that marks the arrival of the monsoon season. Rains also offer much-needed greenery to our surroundings, which is why the festival is known as Hariyali Teej.
Lord Shankar was reunited with Goddess Parvati on this day, according to Hindu mythology. The day also celebrates Goddess Parvati's determination, which she demonstrated by taking 108 incarnations before Lord Shiva relented and married her.
Many people believe that on this day, the Goddess proclaimed that women would be blessed with a happy married life provided they fasted and performed certain rituals.
Married women also go to their parents' house on this day, dressed in new clothes, usually a green saree with bangles and other jewellery. As part of shringaar, those who are fasting apply henna to their hands.
Swings are often decorated with flowers and other items as part of the day's celebrations. Women who keep this fast sing Teej songs and play around these swings.
Sindhara, a bucket of presents, is sent to the wedded daughter's house as part of the day's ritual.
Hariyali Teej is also known as Shravana Teej or Chotti Teej. The Kajari Teej, also known as the Badi Teej, takes place 15 days following this teej.
