A letter, written by the 4-time Bathinda MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, reportedly went viral on social media. The letter, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claimed that the MP was offered a post in the Union Cabinet. However, SAD supremo’s wife declined the offer saying that she could not accept the offer due to issues like the convicted Bandi Singhs, NSA crackdown on Punjabi youth, MSP law on crops, and undue interference in Sikh Gurudhams and Gurudwaras.
Now, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has come forward saying that the letter and its content are fake. A statement by the party read, “A letter in the name of Bibi Harsimrat Kaur Badal is being circulated on social media by some mischievous people, which is completely false, do not pay attention to rumours.”
The letter, supposedly by the MP, read: I, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, thank you for offering me the post of Union Minister. However, keeping in mind the issues of release of convicted Bandi Singhs, NSA crackdown on Punjab youth, MSP laws on crops, and undue interference in Sikh Gurudhams and Gurudwaras, I cannot accept the post of Union Minister. Therefore, I request that my name be removed from the list of Union Minister posts.”
Harsimrat Kaur Badal secured a fourth consecutive win in the Lok Sabha elections in the Bathinda Constituency. Not only this, SAD only managed to win just one seat across Punjab. This was the first time since 1996 that SAD had contested the Punjab elections without an alliance with BJP, who themselves walked away with a duck in the Punjab LS polls.
