Heavy rainfall and snowfall have been reported across six districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Lahaul Spiti, Chamba Kangara, Kullu, Shimla, and Kinnaur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and cold wave conditions across the state for December 27 and 28.
IMD issues Orange Alert
The IMD has warned of persistent heavy snowfall and intense cold waves throughout Himachal Pradesh. The advisory is in effect as the state witnesses significant weather changes, with heavy precipitation impacting both the plains and higher altitudes.
Shobbit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the Himachal Pradesh Meteorological Department, highlighted the outgoing weather activity. “Himachal Pradesh has been experiencing light to moderate rainfall in the plains, while snowfall began in mid and higher-altitude areas around noon on Friday. Snowfall continues in the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangara, and Kullu, along with Shimla and surrounding areas.”
Plains such as Solan, Hamirpur, and Unna have been recording consistent rainfall, with weather conditions expected to persist until the morning of December 29. The IMD also reported a sharp temperature drop, with readings declining by 5-6 degrees. Celsius within just half an hour on December 27.
Heavy snowfall and cold wave forecast
High-altitude regions across six districts are bracing for heavier snowfall as weather conditions are expected to intensify by the morning of December 28. Light to moderate snowfall is forecast across most regions, while Simla recorded temperatures hovering around 5°C on Friday. A further sharp decline in minimum temperatures is anticipated after December 29.
Shimla, which saw maximum temperatures of 13°C on December 26, experienced a drop to 7°C on December 27. The IMD predicts a prolonged cold wave across the state, potentially lasting until January 1.
Extended cold wave warning
Severe cold conditions are expected to prevail in districts including Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba. Dense fog is also anticipated in isolated pockets, causing potential disruptors to daily activities such as travel.
Advisory for residents and travelers
The IMD has urged residents and travelers to exercise extreme caution while venturing into snow-affected regions. Authorities have warned of possible road blockages, disruptions in essential services, and hazardous travel conditions. Tourists are advised to check the weather updates regularly, avoid non-essential travel, and follow official guidelines to ensure their safety.
