Hoshairpur witnesses low voter turnout in 2024 LS Polls as compared to 2019; Check Polling Percentage

The 2024 parliamentary elections in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur constituency saw Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Anita Som Parkash, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal, Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) Sohan Singh Thandal, and Congress’ Yamini Gomar battling it out for the Lok Sabha seat.

The seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 saw polling in 54 constituencies across 8 states/UTs in India. It included all 13 parliamentary constituencies in Punjab. In Punjab’s Hoshiarpur constituency, a voter turnout of 58.10 % was seen. This was a decrease from the 2019 polls, which saw a 62.16% voter turnout.
   
In 2019, 59.56% of the male electors cast their vote, 64.43% of the females cast their vote and 23.33% of the transgenders cast their vote.

The 2024 parliamentary elections in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur constituency saw Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Anita Som Parkash, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal, Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) Sohan Singh Thandal, and Congress’ Yamini Gomar battling it out for the Lok Sabha seat. Chabbewal, a two time MLA from the Chabbewal assembly constituency, had recently switched parties, leaving Congress to join AAP. Anita Som Parkash is the wife of the 2019 general election winner in Hoshiarpur, Som Parkash, who will not be competing this year.

Hoshiarpur is one of the 2 reserved parliamentary seats in Punjab, the other being Jalandhar. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections saw BJP’s Som Parkash taking the victory over Chabbewal, who was contesting on a Congress ticket at the time, with 42.5% of the votes. The 2014 elections also saw a victory for the BJP through Vijay Sampla. However, Congress managed to take the crown in the 2009 parliamentary elections with Santosh Chowdhary. 

In the 2024 elections, Hoshiarpur saw polling in 1,963 polling stations across the constituency. Of the 15,93,018 electors, 8,26,679 were male, 7,66,293 were female, and 43 were transgender.

The results for the 2024 elections will be announced on June 4.
