On Sunday, veteran Marathi actor Vikram Gokhale backed Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s Independence remark on India’s fight for independence, the remark read, “That wasn’t freedom, those were alms. And we got real freedom in 2014. If freedoms come after begging, can that be real freedom?”.
Speaking in an event in Maharashtra, veteran actor Gokhale said, to the media website The Indian Express, “I agree with what Kangana has said. We got freedom in alms. The fighters who wanted to snatch it from the British were hanged and the bigwigs at that time did not attempt to save them. I also agree with what Ranaut said that we got real freedom in 2014.”
While sharing his views about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gokhale was quoted saying, “When PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah go on the election campaign, I don’t agree with what they say. But yes, when they work in the national interest, like how they put China on the backfoot, I support them.”

He also said that my views are my views and they are not dedicated towards any political party. He said, “My views are my views. They are not dictated by any political parties. All parties are similar”.
He further spoke about the political scenario in the state and said that BJP and Shiv Sena should ally for the betterment of the state. “BJP and Shiv Sena should come together again. I questioned (opposition leader and former Maharashtra chief minister) Devendra Fadnavis about the possible alliance between the two parties on the condition of sharing the post of CM for equal years. Both parties should try to win the people's confidence. I feel political parties should not deceive people because people can punish them,” he was quoted saying.
