Who is real-life Hayes Cambell?
As per NBC, Amazon Prime Video's The Idea of You is based on a 2017 novel by Robinne Lee loosely inspired by One Direction pop star Harry Styles' dating life. It means real-life Hayes Cambell is none other than Harry Styles. However, The Idea of You is not entirely a true story as the makers have tweaked the ending and also used fictional names. For instance, the fictional boys' band name- August Moon.
For the unversed, One Direction singer Harry Styles was romantically linked to Caroline Flack in 2011. Harry Styles was only 17-years-old, however, Caroline Flack was already in her 30s. Harry Styles met the “X Factor” presenter when he competed on the show along with the other members of One Direction. "I already knew that he had a crush on me, he’d made it pretty obvious,” Flack had written in her autobiography, 'Storm in a C Cup.' Notably, Harry Styles broke up with Caroline Flack after being criticised for their age gap. Ultimately, Caroline Flack died in February 2020 at age 40 by hanging herself in her London home.

It is pertinent to mention here that The Idea of You's ending has been altered by the makers and it is not the same as the book. Showalter and Schulman in an interview with a US portal had explained that when it comes to romance movies, Showalter believes that audiences want to see some hope for the couple being together. Hence, The Idea of You didn't even have to give audiences a definitive answer on the couple's relationship status to leave them satisfied.
