The second wave of coronavirus pandemic has turned out to
be more deadly than the first as it has claimed an overwhelming number of
deaths. However, there are people who are battling against the virus with optimism and high spirits while others seem to be controlled by the severity of
the disease.
In add into the list of heart-wrenching incident, Assistant Registrar of IIT Kanpur died by suicide on May 11 amidst the Covid crisis. The deceased registrar has been identified as Surjit Kumar (40), who hanged himself till death.
According to the media reports, the rationale behind such an extreme step is that his younger son had tested positive for the virus a few days before. Due to his son’s condition and prevailing medical crisis, Kumar fall prey to depression.
Kumar is survived by his wife- Bulbul Das, an 8-years-old and a two-and-a-half-years old son. After having his supper on May 10, Kumar went to his room and hanged himself to death. The deceased assistant registrar hailed from Assam and used to live in the university’s residential area.
As news as the news broke out, local police and the forensic team arrived on the spot to commence a probe into the matter. Surjit Kumar’s body was sent for post-mortem to further investigate the cause.

According to the preliminary findings of the police, Kumar was into depression since 2011 and his treatment for the same was underway, said Inspector Veer Singh of Kalyanpur. His health deteriorated after his younger son tested positive for the virus.
