Boat carrying over 100 Indian migrants could be heading to New Zealand, says Police

On Monday, Indian police said that fishing boat that could contain more than 100 Indian migrants may be heading to New Zealand.

The boat which left the Munambam harbour in Kerala on 12th of January was carrying people from Delhi and Tamil Nadu, the officers involved in the case.

A individual from New Delhi arrested in connection with the investigation, Prabhu Dhandapani told the police that the boat was heading to New Zealand.

Estimates of the number of people on board vary between 100 and 200 people, including women and children, the officers informed.

Police have recovered more than 70 bags left behind by the migrants, as well as around 20 identification documents officer VG Ravindran said. Officer MJ Sojan said that the bags were full of dry goods and clothes which suggested that they were preparing fr a long journey.

The people and the boat are missing reportedly missing somewhere in the sea. Many Indian agencies including the coastguard are trying to locate the boat.

For the migrants to reach New Zealand, they would need to travel more than 7000 miles through some of the roughest seas in the world.
