India, ASEAN to bolster naval sector, improve connectivity

The two sides also discussed the ways to further deepen cooperation on economic matters as well as overall strengthening of the ASEAN Secretariat

In the 21st ASEAN-India Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) held on April 11 and 12, the two sides gave a nod over many agendas including naval sector and connectivity.

The Association of South-Asian Nations (ASEAN), is a local intergovernmental organization comprising ten countries in Southeast Asia, which promotes intergovernmental support and helps economic, political, security, military, educational, and socio-cultural incorporation among its members and other countries in Asia.

Co-chaired by Vijay Thakur Singh, SOM Leader and Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, and Busaya Mathelin, SOM Leader and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand said, “The meeting assessed the progress of cooperation under all three pillars -- political-security, economic and socio-cultural.”

The two sides also discussed the ways to further deepen cooperation on economic matters as well as overall strengthening of the ASEAN Secretariat. The two sides also promised to step up support in renewable energy and hold an ASEAN-India Conference on Renewable Energy in 2019.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) would be the co-partners for this project.
