The Covid pandemic does not look like to halt for a bit in India. India added a record 80,092 fresh Covid case on Sunday, becoming the first country in the world to cross the 80K mark in a single day.
Ending of the month is revealed as the worst of the August month. The growth rate in both fresh cases and fatalities not only increased after a dip, but more than doubled compared to the preceding week.
Since mid to late July, the US has been on its second trough, with daily cases dropping off by almost 25,000. India’s seven-day average of daily cases has at least doubled since mid-July. And unlike the US, the country hasn’t seen any troughs.
The Indian Council of Medical Research said that India tested over 8 lakh samples for coronavirus on Sunday. The total samples tested so far are 4,23,07,914.
Sunday’s peak of fresh cases came on the back of Maharashtra ecording its second-highest surge with 16,408 infections — more than 16,000 cases for the second consecutive day — as well as five other states/UTs registering their highest peaks UP (which crossed the 6,000-mark for the first time with 6,233 new cases), Rajasthan (1,450 fresh cases),Madhya Pradesh (1,558), Chhattisgarh (1,471)and Jammu & Kashmir (786).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Sunday announced the extension of coronavirus-induced lockdown in the state till September 30, but with several relaxations including scrapping of Sunday lockdown, e-pass system for inter-district journey and others.
A 53-year-old government doctor posted in Amritsar's Civil Hospital in Punjab died on Sunday owing to coronavirus. Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu attended the cremation of Senior Medical Officer Arun Sharma and described him as the true corona warrior.

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 25.1 million, while the deaths have increased to over 845,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 5,995,102 and 183,047 respectively, according to the CSSE. Brazil came in the second place with 3,862,311 infections and 120,828 deaths.
In terms of cases, India ranks third (3,542,733), and is followed by Russia (987,470), Peru (639,435), South Africa (625,056)
