After the completion of the Paris Olympics 2024, India sends its largest 84-member contingent to the Paris Paralympic 2024 in its nation’s history and is set to compete at the Paralympic games, beginning Wednesday night.

The team is a mix of young talent and experienced athletes, all aiming to break records.

History of India in Paralympic: 

India first competed in the Summer Paralympics in 1968 and has been a strong contender in recent years.

India had a commendable performance at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, winning 19 medals, including five golds, and finishing 24th overall. 

This year, India’s goal is to surpass 25 medals, with hopes of bringing home medals in double digits.

When is the Paris Paralympic starting?

Opening ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The opening ceremony will be available for live streaming on the Jio Cinema app and website.

Timing: 11.30 PM IST 

Sumit Antil (javelin thrower) and Bhagyashree Jadhav (shot putter) will be bearing the Indian flag at the Paris Paralympic 2024 opening ceremony. 

Closing ceremony scheduled for September 9, 2024, at 12:30 AM IST.

What is the schedule of the Paris Paralympic 2024?

The events at the Paris Paralympic will start at 11 AM IST and will continue past midnight. 

Most of the big medal events will be held in the evening or even past midnight, according to IST. It is likely that shooting will be held in the early evening.

How many sports are there in the Paris Paralympic?

Total sports at Paralympic 2024 are 22; total events in those sports will be 549. Paracycling, para rowing, and blind judo were added to the program for the Paris Paralympic 2024.

India will be participating in 12 of these sports.

How are Paralympic athletes classified in the Paralympic?

Athletes are divided into “different sports classes."  It depends on individual athletes physical impairment limits to perform any activity.  

There are eight different types of physical impairments:

  • Impaired muscle power

  • Impaired passive range of movement

  • Limb deficiency

  • Leg length difference

  • Short stature

  • Hypertonia

  • Ataxia.

Some sports have only one sports class; it depends. The Paralympics have more than 50 sports classes. 

How many countries are participating in the Paris Paralympics 2024?

There are a total of 167 nations participating in the Paralympics 2024, as well as neutral Paralympic athletes (para-athletes from Russia and Belarus) and the Refugee Paralympic team.

However, Pramod Bhagat, a badminton gold medallist in Tokyo who could have been a gold prospect for India, will not be participating at the Paris Paralympic 2024 due to a ban imposed on him for doping offence.
